How to Choose the Right AC System for Your Jacksonville Home

A practical guide to sizing, efficiency ratings, compressor types, and what to ask your contractor.

Replacing your air conditioning system is one of the bigger home investments you'll make — especially in Northeast Florida, where your AC runs harder and longer than almost anywhere else in the country. Getting the right system matters. The wrong choice can mean higher energy bills, uneven cooling, and a system that wears out faster than it should.

Start With the Right Size — Not the Biggest One

The most common mistake homeowners make is assuming bigger is better. It isn't.

An oversized AC system will cool your home quickly but shut off before it has time to remove humidity from the air. In Florida's climate, that means a home that feels cold but clammy — and a system that short-cycles constantly, wearing out components faster and driving up repair costs.

An undersized system has the opposite problem: it runs continuously, can't keep up on the hottest days, and burns through energy trying to do a job it's not equipped for.

Proper sizing requires a Manual J load calculation — a detailed analysis that accounts for your home's square footage and layout, ceiling height and insulation levels, window size and orientation, local climate data, and the number of occupants and heat-generating appliances.

Any reputable HVAC contractor should perform a Manual J calculation before recommending a system. If someone gives you a quote based solely on square footage, that's a red flag.

Understand SEER2 Ratings

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) is the current standard for measuring AC efficiency. The higher the SEER2 rating, the more efficiently the system uses electricity to cool your home.

In Florida, the minimum SEER2 rating for new residential systems is 14.3 SEER2 (as of 2023 federal standards for the Southeast). Higher-efficiency systems in the 16–20+ SEER2 range can meaningfully reduce your cooling costs over the life of the system.

In Jacksonville, where cooling season runs roughly 8–9 months, a more efficient system pays back its premium faster than it would in a cooler climate. A good contractor will help you run the numbers on payback period based on your specific usage patterns.

Single-Stage vs. Two-Stage vs. Variable-Speed

Beyond size and efficiency, the type of compressor technology in your system affects both comfort and operating costs.

Single-stage systems

These operate at one speed: full blast. They're the most affordable upfront and are reliable workhorses. The tradeoff is that they cycle on and off more frequently, which can create temperature swings and less effective humidity control.

Two-stage systems

These can run at a lower capacity (typically around 65–70%) during mild conditions and ramp up to full capacity when needed. They run longer cycles at lower intensity, which improves humidity removal and provides more even temperatures throughout the home.

Variable-speed (inverter-driven) systems

These are the most sophisticated option, able to modulate their output continuously to match the exact cooling demand of your home at any given moment. They're the most efficient, the quietest, and the best at humidity control — but also the most expensive upfront.

For Jacksonville's climate, two-stage or variable-speed systems are worth serious consideration. Extended run times at lower capacity are particularly effective at managing Florida's high humidity.

Choosing a Brand

Several reputable brands manufacture quality residential AC systems. The brand matters less than the installation quality and the contractor standing behind the work — but here are a few names you'll commonly see in Northeast Florida:

  • Carrier — One of the oldest and most established names in HVAC; strong reliability record and wide parts availability.
  • Goodman — Solid value; owned by Daikin, one of the world's largest HVAC manufacturers.
  • Lennox — Known for high-efficiency systems; strong performance at the upper end of the SEER2 range.
  • Trane and Rheem — Also widely used and well-regarded throughout Northeast Florida.

Don't Overlook the Air Handler and Ductwork

The outdoor unit gets most of the attention, but your air handler (the indoor unit) and ductwork are equally important to system performance. Studies have found that leaky duct systems can lose 20–30% of conditioned air before it reaches the living space.

When replacing your system, ask your contractor to inspect your existing ductwork for leaks and damage, verify that duct sizing is appropriate for the new system, and confirm that the air handler is properly matched to the outdoor unit.

A mismatched system — where the air handler and outdoor unit aren't designed to work together — will underperform and may void manufacturer warranties.

What to Ask Your HVAC Contractor

Before agreeing to any installation, make sure you get clear answers to these questions:

  1. 1Will you perform a Manual J load calculation?
  2. 2What SEER2 rating are you recommending, and why?
  3. 3Are the indoor and outdoor units matched and from the same manufacturer?
  4. 4Will you inspect my ductwork as part of the installation?
  5. 5What does the installation include — permits, startup, testing, walkthrough?
  6. 6What warranties apply, and what do they cover?
  7. 7Can I get a written estimate before any work begins?

A reputable contractor will always provide a written estimate before starting work. If someone pressures you to decide on the spot without a written quote, walk away.

Making the Right Decision for Your Home
